Combat in Unscathed is turn-based with visual cutscenes on every skill cast. This guide covers the exact turn timing, skill damage math, and when to use each attack type from live combat data.

Key insight: Critical skills hit at 1× damage with 70% accuracy - one clean landing removes most enemies. Missing wastes the wind-up cost with no return. Learning to read the enemy's slow rotation frame is the difference between one-shot and grind.

Turn timing

When your turn starts, you get 10 seconds to pick your aura and skill. The equip delay is 0.35 seconds before the cutscene actually plays. Item Step (using combat items) takes 1 second per action.

Practical: pick your aura within 3 seconds, spend the remaining 7 seconds reading the enemy's telegraphs. Miss the timer and your turn locks to Punch by default.

Normal vs Critical vs Punch

Punch

0.17× damage multiplier, Fast speed, 100% accuracy. Fallback attack every aura has. Chip damage only

Normal skill

0.33× damage multiplier, Normal speed, 100% accuracy. Bread-and-butter attack for every Uncommon-tier or higher aura. Costs PP (Power Points)

Critical skill

1.00× damage multiplier, Slow speed, 70% accuracy. One-shot potential but 30% miss rate. Use on high-HP enemies when you can safely land in range

When to use each skill

  • Boss room, high HP enemy - lead with Critical, follow up with Normal on cooldown.
  • Low HP enemy, chip damage window - Punch. Save PP for the next big hit.
  • Enemy telegraphs a Critical - Normal skill (reliable damage, don't waste Critical's 70% on a fast enemy frame).
  • PvP Dojo, mind games - alternate Normal and Critical to bait dodge timing.

Combat items (consumables)

Combat items are one-shot buffs used mid-fight. Small/Medium/Large Damage Potion boost your next attack. Small/Medium/Large Heal Potion restore your aura HP.

Use Item Step during a turn where you don't need to attack - a 1 second animation applies the buff, then your next turn's skill fires with the multiplier.

PvP Dojo

Challenge Sensei to enter Dojo PvP mode. Matches are best-of-three at your current Skill Point loadout. Losing costs nothing; winning bumps your Dojo rank.

Meta: Attack skill tree investment matters most for PvP. Critical strike chance nodes reduce the 70% miss floor on Critical skills - massive value over Story Mode.

FAQ

How does combat work in Unscathed?

Turn-based with a 10 second window each turn to pick your aura and skill. Every aura has Punch (0.17× damage, always accurate), Normal skill (0.33× damage, 100% accurate) and, from Uncommon tier up, Critical skill (1× damage, 70% accuracy).

When should I use Critical vs Normal skill in Unscathed?

Critical on high-HP boss enemies when you can safely land. Normal skill against fast-rotation enemies or as reliable chip damage when Critical would miss. Punch is fallback when both are on cooldown or PP.

What is the best aura for PvP Dojo in Unscathed?

Any aura with a Critical skill from Rare tier up (Aqua, Nocturnal, Cupid, Shogun's Wrath) plus heavy investment in the Attack skill tree. Critical chance nodes reduce the 70% miss floor.

Do combat items work in Story Mode Unscathed?

Yes. Damage and Heal potions apply to your next attack via a 1 second Item Step. Save them for boss rooms - Small variants are Story Mode-friendly, Large variants for PvP finals.

How much damage does a Critical do in Unscathed?

Critical skill damage is 1.00× the aura's damage multiplier at 70% accuracy. In practice one landed Critical removes 30-70% of a boss HP bar. Compared to Normal at 0.33× damage, Critical is a 3× damage swing when it lands.
